Personal History: Taiki

Personality: If you asked Taiki to sum up his life in one word it would be failure. He was created for one purpose only. To find the king of Tai and to serve that king, obey that king and keep them on the right path. To be the embodiment of the will of the people of Tai and bring them prosperity and peace.

Instead eighteen years after he was born Tai is in ruins, the people freezing to death in barren, demon infested fields. A false king sits on the throne and his true king is about to be executed by his own people. Taiki is a failure.

A more neutral judge would point out that Taiki has absolutely no self worth and so his word is perhaps not to be relied on and indeed Taiki has so much bad luck he might actually be cursed.

Taiki was always a timid child with lots of empathy. Unfortunately growing up as a strange creature in a strange world this meant he was always very aware of his shortcomings. He knew even when he was very small when he was causing others pain and sadness. When just being him was causing his family misery.

He has always felt inadequate. When he was first returned to the Twelve Kingdoms he doubted at first he was a kirin. He worried about disappointing the sages. He feared he would never find his king at all. He couldn't transform, he couldn't catch shirei. Even when he finds his king his misunderstands his feelings and believes he has doomed his kingdom.

This just gets worse as he is lost back on earth. He knows something is missing, he knows he has forgotten something and that something is the most important thing. Lost, broken and hurting Taiki stumbles through his human life not fitting in and worse known as a cursed child. His reaction to this is to wall himself in.

Taiki makes passivity into a survival technique. He is not a creature who wishes to harm others but whilst on earth he knows that if he shows any reaction. If he cries when he is hurt, if he shows pain, or any reaction at all to the bullying and abuse more people will get hurt. This continues when he returns to the twelve kingdoms albeit for different reasons. He endures pain and humiliation because helping the citizens of Tai is more important. Letting Risai find Gyousou is more important. He accepts it all calmly.

When Taiki was first taken to the Twelve kingdoms he was a very open and caring child. Now that he had found where he belonged he found himself able to connect with people. He forged strong bonds with Keiki, with Risai. He genuinely liked people and trusted them.

Asen's betrayal took him completely by surprise. He trusted Asen. Asen was Gyousou's ally and friend. Someone who told the truth to Taiki. That Asen turned on them broke something in Taiki. When he returns to the twelve kingdoms he can't even trust Risai. He isn't sure if Asen has organised to get him back from earth to make sure he didn't die (because him dying would but Tai back into the hands of the heavens). It was one of the reasons he didn't tell Risai his plan. He is paranoid. He is trying to play at politics but he really doesn't know what to do.

Kirin aren't meant to scheme and yet Taiki is doing his best at it. He can lie with a straight face. He can wear a mask, speak of things such as Gyousou's death with a uncaring air. He's not good enough to fool Asen. But he is better than any kirin has any right to be.

He is generally polite. He knows both how to be a polite person on earth and the courtly etiquette required of him in Tai. The latter he finds difficult, more to mess up and more things to worry about doing wrong but he knows it and knows it well. He will treat everyone with respect and follow the proper forms. However he finds deference to himself strange and awkward- if it was up to him he would treat everyone on an equal level. Gyousou gave up trying to make Taiki understand his high status and put it down to the eccentricities of him being a Taika.

His walls are high and sturdy. He is an expert at keeping people at a distance, at being uninteresting and apart. However with enough patience it is possible to get through those walls, Hirose managed on Earth, Yari managed. Kouryou managed. Underneath it all he is a kind, emphatic young man who truly grieves for the pain and suffering he has caused and yearns to put things right. He fully believes that any pain brought upon him is just because he has caused so much suffering. Underneath it all Taiki is very traumatised, but like the encroaching blood sickness he is running from it because he can't stop. He doesn't have time to stop and unpack any of the mess of his life. He has a kingdom to save.

As if to make up for the utter lack of self worth, Taiki has extraordinary willpower. He cannot defend himself and yet to defend Gyousou he binds a toutetsu. A youma so powerful it shouldn't be able to be bound by a kirin. He only transforms for the first time when he needs to get to Gyousou.

He should not have lived so long in Hourai as a child, but he did. The blood sickness and corruption of his second stint in Horai, not to mention the missing horn should have killed him way before it did but something in Taiki kept him alive.

He bows before Asen and swears a false oath. He does it for his true king. But it should not be possible. It swallows him in darkness, hurts him so much his eyes bleed but he breaks through the pain. He kills. Takes a sword and kills a guard with it. Not on his kings orders. But to get to his kings side.

Taiki is someone who will never lift a hand to defend himself. He will take blows and insults and never even think about retaliating. But he will defend others with his last breath. Taiki basically handed himself to his greatest enemy as a hostage in order to help the citizens of Tai. He has no idea what he is doing. He is following instincts he only half understands. He wants to save Tai, but he has no idea how to do it.

When Taiki puts his mind to something he can do the impossible. But only for his king, only for his kingdom. It is said by the Nyosen that when there is a king such as Gyousou, with almost terrifying ambition the heavens will always provide a kirin such as Taiki.

Kirin are creatures that will always be happy when with their master and always sad when parted. Taiki found his king when he was ten and had six months with him, one of which he was away on a diplomatic mission. Six tiny months in eight years, the rest of the time he has been alone.

Especially since returning to the twelve kingdoms, even in Hourai where sanshi was a terrifying corrupted monster she was still with him. He felt her arms around her in times of sorrow, At times it was the only thing that kept him sane but now he has no shirei, his king is lost. He is a prisoner in all but name.

In conclusion Taiki is a mess. Broken and all but given up. His only hope is that the next kirin of Tai will do a better job and Tai will survive long enough for a new king to take the throne. A failure. But not from any lack of trying his hardest to do the right thing.

CRAU developments: n/a

Key themes:

Loyalty and duty- Taiki's purpose and duty are clear and god given and there is nothing he will not do for his king and kingdom.

What it means to belong to a kingdom and the responsibilities of being a citizen. The importance of taking action to fight against tyranny.

Powerlessness and will. Turns out a one-armed general and a horn-less kirin can do a lot more than anyone thinks.

Main Motivation: Right now it is to get to his king, bow down to him to prove he is the king and then die with him and trust that the next kirin of Tai is less useless then he is.

Generally his motivation is to serve the king and keep him on the right path. But things went a little sideways.

Skills:

Taiki is a Kirin. He has both a human form and a beast form. Whilst in kirin form he can fly and is extremely fast- kirin are the fastest creatures in the Twelve Kingdoms. At canon point his horn has healed enough that he can transform (he does so about a minute after pull point) but he doesn't know this so depending on circumstances he may be without this power for a while.

He is immortal and can only be killed by specific immortal killing weapons or by beheading him/destroying his body (or a bunch of canon specific stuff like shitsedou).

Kirin can understand attempts to communicate. That is, if a creature has thought and is trying to communicate a Kirin can understand it even if they do not use human language.

Kirin cannot cannot eat meat or other animal products. The sight and smell of blood causes blood sickness.

Taiki has ridiculous willpower- so much that it almost a power in itself. It only manifests itself when he is trying to save or assist Gyousou. Things he has done include phasing through solid objects, swapping places with Gouran to evade him. Binding a toutetsu and bowing before Asen.

Mundane skills involve courtly etiquette, 12 Kingdoms politics (except not really because he was ten and then he was a hostage but he's learning), riding and caring for kijyuu, riding a horse (sort of) and painting. He is pretty intelligent and has a modern- earth high school education.

Item:

The sword he stole.
