CHARACTER NAME: Taiki
CHARACTER SERIES: 12 Kingdoms

[OOC]

Backtagging: Yes please! My timezone means that backtagging is my life!
Threadhopping: Sure go ahead! Just make sure the other person is okay with it too!
Fourthwalling: Talk to me first!
Offensive subjects (elaborate): I am generally fine with anything that will come up via dwrp characters, if there is anything I am concerned about I will come and talk to you.

[IC]

Hugging this character: Taiki really needs hugs but will be awkward about it until friendship is established.
Kissing this character: Probably not. He definitely wouldn't reciprocate.
Flirting with this character: I mean go for it? He will mostly be slightly confused and not react.
Fighting with this character: If you really want to beat up a kirin go for it. He's not going to fight back.
Injuring this character (include limits and severity): It's fine, but if we are getting into fight territory discussing is best. Need to navigate blood sickness and all that.
Killing this character: He is pretty hard to kill being effectively immortal but if that's what it comes to sure.
Using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: Sure! Just let me know so I can make more introspection happen!

Warnings: No blanket warnings. I will warn individually if it is needed.

Note

Taiki as a kirin is super sensitive to violence and blood. He can smell blood and it makes him physically ill. In general he isn't effected just by people who are fighters/warriors/kill people sometimes. However if someone has just/recently killed or has a reason to smell of blood (they drink it, bathe in it, are a monster etc) he's going to be able to sense it. Please let me know here (if it's a permanent thing) or in the thread (if it's a temporary thing) so I know to have him react (or you know be super stoic whilst almost passing out).

Character Information

Name: Taiki
Canon: 12 Kingdoms
Canon Point: Hills of Silver Ruins, a Black Moon. Final chapter as he runs towards his king.
OU/AU/CRAU/OC: OU
Age: 18

World Information: 12 Kingdoms

Personal History: Taiki

Personality: If you asked Taiki to sum up his life in one word it would be failure. He was created for one purpose only. To find the king of Tai and to serve that king, obey that king and keep them on the right path. To be the embodiment of the will of the people of Tai and bring them prosperity and peace.

Instead eighteen years after he was born Tai is in ruins, the people freezing to death in barren, demon infested fields. A false king sits on the throne and his true king is about to be executed by his own people. Taiki is a failure.

A more neutral judge would point out that Taiki has absolutely no self worth and so his word is perhaps not to be relied on and indeed Taiki has so much bad luck he might actually be cursed.

Taiki was always a timid child with lots of empathy. Unfortunately growing up as a strange creature in a strange world this meant he was always very aware of his shortcomings. He knew even when he was very small when he was causing others pain and sadness. When just being him was causing his family misery.

He has always felt inadequate. When he was first returned to the Twelve Kingdoms he doubted at first he was a kirin. He worried about disappointing the sages. He feared he would never find his king at all. He couldn't transform, he couldn't catch shirei. Even when he finds his king his misunderstands his feelings and believes he has doomed his kingdom.

This just gets worse as he is lost back on earth. He knows something is missing, he knows he has forgotten something and that something is the most important thing. Lost, broken and hurting Taiki stumbles through his human life not fitting in and worse known as a cursed child. His reaction to this is to wall himself in.

Taiki makes passivity into a survival technique. He is not a creature who wishes to harm others but whilst on earth he knows that if he shows any reaction. If he cries when he is hurt, if he shows pain, or any reaction at all to the bullying and abuse more people will get hurt. This continues when he returns to the twelve kingdoms albeit for different reasons. He endures pain and humiliation because helping the citizens of Tai is more important. Letting Risai find Gyousou is more important. He accepts it all calmly.

When Taiki was first taken to the Twelve kingdoms he was a very open and caring child. Now that he had found where he belonged he found himself able to connect with people. He forged strong bonds with Keiki, with Risai. He genuinely liked people and trusted them.

Asen's betrayal took him completely by surprise. He trusted Asen. Asen was Gyousou's ally and friend. Someone who told the truth to Taiki. That Asen turned on them broke something in Taiki. When he returns to the twelve kingdoms he can't even trust Risai. He isn't sure if Asen has organised to get him back from earth to make sure he didn't die (because him dying would but Tai back into the hands of the heavens). It was one of the reasons he didn't tell Risai his plan. He is paranoid. He is trying to play at politics but he really doesn't know what to do.

Kirin aren't meant to scheme and yet Taiki is doing his best at it. He can lie with a straight face. He can wear a mask, speak of things such as Gyousou's death with a uncaring air. He's not good enough to fool Asen. But he is better than any kirin has any right to be.

He is generally polite. He knows both how to be a polite person on earth and the courtly etiquette required of him in Tai. The latter he finds difficult, more to mess up and more things to worry about doing wrong but he knows it and knows it well. He will treat everyone with respect and follow the proper forms. However he finds deference to himself strange and awkward- if it was up to him he would treat everyone on an equal level. Gyousou gave up trying to make Taiki understand his high status and put it down to the eccentricities of him being a Taika.

His walls are high and sturdy. He is an expert at keeping people at a distance, at being uninteresting and apart. However with enough patience it is possible to get through those walls, Hirose managed on Earth, Yari managed. Kouryou managed. Underneath it all he is a kind, emphatic young man who truly grieves for the pain and suffering he has caused and yearns to put things right. He fully believes that any pain brought upon him is just because he has caused so much suffering. Underneath it all Taiki is very traumatised, but like the encroaching blood sickness he is running from it because he can't stop. He doesn't have time to stop and unpack any of the mess of his life. He has a kingdom to save.

As if to make up for the utter lack of self worth, Taiki has extraordinary willpower. He cannot defend himself and yet to defend Gyousou he binds a toutetsu. A youma so powerful it shouldn't be able to be bound by a kirin. He only transforms for the first time when he needs to get to Gyousou.

He should not have lived so long in Hourai as a child, but he did. The blood sickness and corruption of his second stint in Horai, not to mention the missing horn should have killed him way before it did but something in Taiki kept him alive.

He bows before Asen and swears a false oath. He does it for his true king. But it should not be possible. It swallows him in darkness, hurts him so much his eyes bleed but he breaks through the pain. He kills. Takes a sword and kills a guard with it. Not on his kings orders. But to get to his kings side.

Taiki is someone who will never lift a hand to defend himself. He will take blows and insults and never even think about retaliating. But he will defend others with his last breath. Taiki basically handed himself to his greatest enemy as a hostage in order to help the citizens of Tai. He has no idea what he is doing. He is following instincts he only half understands. He wants to save Tai, but he has no idea how to do it.

When Taiki puts his mind to something he can do the impossible. But only for his king, only for his kingdom. It is said by the Nyosen that when there is a king such as Gyousou, with almost terrifying ambition the heavens will always provide a kirin such as Taiki.

Kirin are creatures that will always be happy when with their master and always sad when parted. Taiki found his king when he was ten and had six months with him, one of which he was away on a diplomatic mission. Six tiny months in eight years, the rest of the time he has been alone.

Especially since returning to the twelve kingdoms, even in Hourai where sanshi was a terrifying corrupted monster she was still with him. He felt her arms around her in times of sorrow, At times it was the only thing that kept him sane but now he has no shirei, his king is lost. He is a prisoner in all but name.

In conclusion Taiki is a mess. Broken and all but given up. His only hope is that the next kirin of Tai will do a better job and Tai will survive long enough for a new king to take the throne. A failure. But not from any lack of trying his hardest to do the right thing.

CRAU developments: n/a

Key themes:

Loyalty and duty- Taiki's purpose and duty are clear and god given and there is nothing he will not do for his king and kingdom.

What it means to belong to a kingdom and the responsibilities of being a citizen. The importance of taking action to fight against tyranny.

Powerlessness and will. Turns out a one-armed general and a horn-less kirin can do a lot more than anyone thinks.

Main Motivation: Right now it is to get to his king, bow down to him to prove he is the king and then die with him and trust that the next kirin of Tai is less useless then he is.

Generally his motivation is to serve the king and keep him on the right path. But things went a little sideways.

Skills:

Taiki is a Kirin. He has both a human form and a beast form. Whilst in kirin form he can fly and is extremely fast- kirin are the fastest creatures in the Twelve Kingdoms. At canon point his horn has healed enough that he can transform (he does so about a minute after pull point) but he doesn't know this so depending on circumstances he may be without this power for a while.

He is immortal and can only be killed by specific immortal killing weapons or by beheading him/destroying his body (or a bunch of canon specific stuff like shitsedou).

Kirin can understand attempts to communicate. That is, if a creature has thought and is trying to communicate a Kirin can understand it even if they do not use human language.

Kirin cannot cannot eat meat or other animal products. The sight and smell of blood causes blood sickness.

Taiki has ridiculous willpower- so much that it almost a power in itself. It only manifests itself when he is trying to save or assist Gyousou. Things he has done include phasing through solid objects, swapping places with Gouran to evade him. Binding a toutetsu and bowing before Asen.

Mundane skills involve courtly etiquette, 12 Kingdoms politics (except not really because he was ten and then he was a hostage but he's learning), riding and caring for kijyuu, riding a horse (sort of) and painting. He is pretty intelligent and has a modern- earth high school education.

Item:

The sword he stole.

CW: A lot of death and also a suicide attempt

After the death of the previous kirin of Tai from Shitsedou the taika (egg fruit of the kirin of tai) began to grow on the tree in mount Hou. Soon the taika's Nyokai was born, she was called Sanshi and she took up her post to protect the taika, who she declared as Taiki.

However a shoku hit mount Hou and blew the egg fruit from the tree, sending it through to the world beyond. To Hourai (Japan) where it found itself in the womb of a human woman and born instead of the child they believed they would have. Thus Taiki was born on earth, a taika (12 kingdoms citizen wrongly born on earth) and grew up as a human child.

It had happened before, kirin becoming taika but they often did not survive long. They were either found within five years or they would eventually perish and a new ranka would grow. But Taiki survived as Takasato Kaname, lost for ten years on earth.

He was a strange child, always set apart from his peers. He had an aversion to meat, was afraid of blood, was often sickly. His mother cared for him but his strangeness often upset her. He both seemed older than his years but was timid and shied from conflict. His grandmother was strict and old fashioned and often punished him for perceived disrespect. So he grew, never fitting in but always kind and friendly. Feeling more at ease with animals than humans and feeling guilty about the pain he brought his family.

When he was ten years old he was punished by his grandma for not apologising to her for spilling water. He had spilled no water and lying felt so wrong to him that he would not do it. She sent him to stand in the yard in the snow until he changed his ways. He felt a warm wind and saw a pure white arm from behind the shed, a space far too small for a person. He stepped towards it, was grabbed and pulled through to Mount Hou. There they were delighted to find he was a black Kirin. A rare beast for usually kirin have golden or pale manes. Taiki's mane is burnished steel.

There he learned the truth. He was not a human at all but a kirin. He was from another world and it was here that he belonged. He met sanshi who he took an instant liking too. He was frightened but also understood that the reason he had never fit in was because he was in the wrong place. He learned that he was to chose a king and serve at his side.

However things were not smooth. He was a kirin and everything kirin do is instinctual.. Most Kirin spend their first five years in Kirin form, able to transform into human form after a couple of years and slowly able to maintain it for longer. Using the yellow sea as their playground they tame Shirei to protect them. By the time they can maintain a human form and are ready to chose a king they have several Shirei to protect them. Not so for Taiki. Despite Keiki's reassurance that changing form was as easy as lifting your arm, Taiki was unable to do so. In fact he wasn't really sure what he should be transforming into (he translates kirin into the more mundane form of a giraffe and tries to do neck stretches to help the change).

His attempts at catching Shirei of his own were equally unsuccessful and his feelings of inadequacy grew. He felt like he is disappointing the sages, who were so kind to him and he worried about what will happen if he cannot be a proper Kirin.

But he is old enough and Tai has suffered a long time without a king so despite him not having transformed yet or having any shirei the gates are opened and the pilgrimage begins. As people begin climbing the mountain Taiki feels that something terrible is coming, something terrifying.

He meets many people. One is Risai, a general from Tai who has a Kijyuu called Hien. He visits Risai a lot, enjoying her company and developing a bond with Hien.

He also meets a man named Gyousou. Gyousou terrifies Taiki and yet Taiki wants to be close to him. His eyes are the colour of blood. He is like a fire, warm and bright yet terrifying and dangerous all at the same time. Despite the fear Taiki often sought Gyousou out.

Soon it became obvious that a king was not going to be chosen this time and the gates were closed. Gyousou took Risai and Taiki into the yellow sea to catch Kijyuu. Whilst there they accidentally end up in the cave of a toutetsu. A powerful Youma. So powerful that it would not normally be able to be bound as a shirei. Taiki had ordered Sanshi to take Risai away but then Gyousou is hurt and cannot move. Taiki meets the eyes of the Youma and enters into a battle of wills. It takes the whole day, night and into the next day yet Taiki subdues the toutetsu and bounds him.

Gouran, the shirei is called. It is a formidable achievement for such a tiny and timid kirin. Gyousou admits that he was not as injured as he claimed, but he had instinctively known that if he had moved Taiki would have not been able to keep the concentration and they would have both been overpowered and killed.

People begin to leave the mountain. Gyousou and Risai are among them. Taiki feels he will miss Risai but when he thinks about Gyousou leaving it is a very bad thing. He goes to say goodbye and Gyousou admits that he is planning on leaving the army. He had been too prideful in thinking he could be king and he could do with a lesson in humility.

Taiki is devastated that he will never see him again but says his goodbyes. That night he is restless and he hears the sages speaking about how Gyousou would have made a great king. Not being able to take it anymore Taiki rushed out into the night, evading both Sanshi and Gouran, transforming into his kirin form for the first time and catching up to Gyousou.

There he transformed back and bowed before Gyousou, swearing his allegiance and proclaiming him king. He believed that he was acting against the heavens, that he was acting selfishly and that his actions were wrong.

Events moved too fast for him to correct his mistake. They returned to mount Hou, Gyousou was afforded all the privileges of king in waiting. They got ready to ascend. Taiki learned that kings that did their kingdom harm were punished by heaven, their kirin struck down with shitsedou and the king dying shortly after. Taiki lived in fear that he had condemned Gyousou to death and the kingdom to ruin.

Gyousou was confused about why his kirin was so terrified and unsure. After a nyosen suggested it might just be that Taiki was about to be once again taken from everything and everyone he knew Gyousou took the time to learn Taiki's earth name- Takasato Kaname. He took Takasato and changed it subtly to Kouri, the name of the mountain of the dead. A name so ominous that Gyousou hoped it would bring good luck. It became his nickname for Taiki.

They ascended, they were not struck down and they went to Tai to prepare for the coronation. Keiki came to visit and Taiki finally admitted that he had chosen a false king. Keiki left him weeping, but did inform Gyousou and then enlisted the help of the king and kirin of En. Together they showed Taiki that a kirin could not bow down before anyone who was not their king. A kirin could not swear a false oath. Though Shouryuu took it a bit too far Taiki was relieved by the lesson. Keiki and Enki explained to him that the ouki is more a feeling, an instinct rather than a visible thing.

The fear, the idea that Gyousou was fire, that was the ouki. Awe. Taiki had found his king. The coronation was held and Tai had a king once more.

There were troubles of course. Gyousou was a general and as such his methods were swift and effective, which did not sit well with a troubled court. He was known as a whirlwind or an avalanche. Swift change that the average minister could barely keep up with.

Taiki struggled as well. He was both a child, in that he was only ten years old and had spent most of that time in another world where he was treated like a child. Here he was an adult, a minister, servant to the king and the embodiment of the will of an entire kingdom. The ministers weren't sure how to treat him. They were gentle, not wanting to upset the timid and shy kirin. But others disagreed, he was a kirin. Furthermore he was a kirin who had subdued a toutetsu, stronger than he looked. He had to be ready for the struggles ahead. A regent was put in place, a man named Seirai who made the actual decisions of the province whilst also tutoring Taiki, trying to teach him all the things he should have learned on mount Hou.

As winter fell upon Tai Gyousou sent him on a month long diplomatic mission to Ren, to thank them for their help in bringing him back from Hourai. This was actually to get him out of the way whilst Gyousou purged the corrupt ministers from the government. Taiki met the king of Ren and Renrin. The King of Ren was a farmer first and formost. He learned about how a kings job is to govern and watch over their kingdom, to provide for the people and make a prosperous place to live. A kirins job is to watch over their king, support them but also draw them back when they go too far and keep them on the right path.

Taiki returned to Tai where Gyousou had moved his quarters so they were closer to his own. Taiki was thrilled as he had previously barely got to see Gyousou very much as they were both so busy. Gyousou also gifted him with a horse and riding lessons as Taiki could not bare to be carried in a palaquin.

A month later there was an uprising in Bun Province. The city of Tetsui ended up in revolt, Tetsui was a city that Gyousou had deep connections to, having once put down a rebellion there without having hurt a single citizen in his days as a general. He went to try and calm things down once more.

There were many rumours flying around that it was a trap, that Gyousou would be attacked. All the ministers told Taiki it would be fine, there was no danger. Others like Rousan and Asen told him the truth, claiming that as they needed the Taiho to mobilise the guard it was only right that he knew.

Taiki, believing that people were keeping things from him because he was small and probably stupid stopped believing those that tried to tell him good news. He believed the bad things because it was not being sugar coated. Asen especially was a source of news, telling him the rumours. He was the one who told him Gyousou had been attacked, Taiki wanted to help and Asen manipulated him via reverse psychology to send his shirei north to help Gyousou. Taiki did it believing he was disobeying Asen but wanting to do anything to save his king.

A while later he met with Asen again, Asen told him the king was dead. Taiki was horrified and didn't believe him but also trusted him. He was confused and terrified, slow to realise what was happening when Asen drew his sword. Taiki tried to run but Asen attacked him, severing his horn.

A meishoku is a super storm that is formed from the scream of a kirin. It is a primal last ditch survival instinct of a beast. All kirin are capable of them as they are capable of shoku. They are instinctual and devastating. Taiki, not having most of the kirin instincts others took for granted should not have known how to form a shoku. But in his moment of greatest pain formed a meishoku that destroyed large chunks of the palace, killed many of those not fortunate enough to have immortality and sent him hurtling through to earth.

Sanshi and Gouran heard his scream and travelled through the ley lines, diving into his shadow as he fell through the storm. Taiki landed on earth, naked, bleeding from the head, dazed. He stumbled through a door into his old house, currently in the middle of his grandmothers wake.

His taika shell had closed around him, the kirin part of him was in tatters and retreated deep inside him, taking the memories of the last year with it. Sanshi and Gouran were trapped in his shadow, not knowing what was happening. But it soon became clear to them that Taiki was in the hands of enemies. Perhaps connected to the coup. They were his jailers though they kept him fed and sheltered. The jailers gave his contaminated food, slowly poisoning him, though his taika shell was unharmed. They punished him for no more than simply being himself.

Taiki, now Takasato Kaname once more could not remember the year he had been spirited away. For him he had been in his yard and then he had been in his house, injured with longer hair but no taller. Now his younger brother was in the same class as him at school. He was interviewed by police, doctors but he had no answers for them. He was taken to many psychologists who tried to piece together what had happened to him but no one could breach the block in his memory.

He had no idea what had happened to him, but he felt that something huge was missing. Something so important it should never be forgotten. He dreamed often of mountains, of a palace. Faces that fled from his conscious memory the moment he woke. He was tormented with a longing to return, but he did not know where he was supposed to return to or why.

He did not fit in, he was desperately lonely and though people at first reacted to him with pity for his ordeal he was soon known as strange, a person to be avoided, mocked or hurt.

Then the accidents began to occur. A child would shove him down in the playground, tease him and hurt him. That child later would fall into a ditch and break his arm. He began to be known as cursed, people turned cruel both to him and his brother. His brother blamed him. His father blamed him. His mother cried and wondered if this was even her lost child or if a changeling had been brought back.

Years went on. Kaname learned to be boring. To attract no attention. To speak only when spoken to and as little as possible. He was known as strange and rude. But he knew he could not let anyone close. Because if they got close eventually they would say something harsh or a pat on the back would land too hard and then they would be hurt. Then they would die.

Because the accidents got worse. Because of course they were not accidents at all. Sanshi and Gouran, the demons who lived in his shadows. Demons Kaname could not sense or remember. They stopped all threats to their kirin.

Because Sanshi and Gohran didn't understand what had happened. They saw his parents as his jailers. They knew they couldn't kill them even as they slowly poisoned Taiki and raised their hands to him, as they were technically keeping Taiki fed and sheltered. But all others who beat him and cursed him they could get revenge on.

As they hurt more people Taiki was further poisoned and corrupted, this lessened his hold on him and allowed them to slip from his shadow for longer. Which allowed them greater acts of revenge.

Kaname took solace in art. His paintings were strange, he painted half forgotten things from his dreams. He saw in his minds eye a mountain. Sometimes he dreamed of a dog. Sometimes he even thought he saw the dog, out of the corner of his eyes. And sometimes when everything hurt he swore he could feel arms around him, holding him like they were all that were keeping him safe in the world. Most of all he had the feeling he had forgotten something, a promise he should never forget.

When Takasato was sixteen he tested into a prestigious high school. On a school trip at the end of his first year a student died after bullying Takasato. By this point his parents had all but disowned him. They allowed him to stay in their house but refused to call him name, calling him only 'that child'. His brother was cruel, the students at school ignored him out of fear.

Accidents followed him into his second year. A student teacher named Hirose took an interest in Takasato. After a student hit Takasato and was subsequently trampled to death in an athletics practice a mob of students attacked Takasato and tried to hang him.

Takasato did not fight back, making himself passive until they forced him to his knees and tried to make him bow down and apologise. Takasato yelled no and fought their arms off, the most emotion Hirose had seen him show ever. In the scuffle Takasato was thrown out of the window and Hirose was injured trying to break up the fight.

Hirose went visit Takasato in hospital to learn that he was only a superficially injured and could go home but though his parents had been informed no one had come to collect them and the hospital wouldn't discharge a minor without a guardian collecting them.

Hirose went to Takasato's house where his mother told him she wanted nothing to do with that child, he was free to come home but she would not go to collect him. Hirose, concerned about Takasato's welfare suggested that Takasato could stay with him for a little while until things calmed down, his mother agreed and permission was granted to Takasato to be discharged.

That night Hirose saw a strange pale figure who asked if he was an enemy of the king. He, half asleep, answered that he was not. He and Takasato speak a bit about lost memories and spiriting away. Takasato has done research on half forgotten concepts. Kirin legends from China, water demons, sirens. Jigsaw pieces that make no sense. Mountains looking down on the sea. They talk about going to the mountains in south America, to seek out far off places and live peaceful lives.

Takasato stayed off from school for a couple of days and considers withdrawing and leaving to save everyone from him. He and Hirose get closer, Hirose breaking through the walls that he has put around himself and learning of Takasato's dreams and fears.

Unbeknown to Takasato, a multi kingdom search for him has begun. Thanks to Risai and Yuoko and Enki seven of the twelve kingdoms have banded together and sent Kirin to earth. Sairin, Sourin and Kyouki go to China. Enki, Keiki, Hanrin and Renrin search Japan. None of them know it but as they follow the trail the golden threads of kirin energy they leave behind wrap themselves into Taiki's soul and begin to free to tattered remains of the kirin trapped inside.

Many of those involved in trying to hang Takasato were injured, eight of them were killed. The media started going wild. Eventually Hirose hears rumour that Takasato's brother has been absent from school and his father from work. Takasato has had no contact with his family and is worried.

They go to Takasato's house, to find their mutilated corpses. The police are called, Takasato is taken back to Hirose's house where he weeps and blames himself entirely. Hirose wonders if it was instead his own fault. In a way he is correct, once he took Taiki in Sanshi knew that Taiki had somehow escaped his jail to somewhere a little kinder. She had her revenge.

At the funeral none of Takasato's relatives want to take him in, though they soon change their tune when they learn that they would be able to claim his parents home and money. Still no one quite wishes to take on a cursed child and the matter is inconclusive, Takasato continues to stay with Hirose.

At the shrine a concrete arc collapses, killing many of the reporters. Near Hirose's home a car swerves and kills a bunch more reporters. Hirose tries figure out if it is Takasato doing all of this, if he has some kind of strange power. If his ego is what is killing them. He gets angry and Takasato says he is leaving and Hirose mocks him, but soon feels bad as Takasato tries to keep himself passive and calm. They make up.

Takasato is called into school where they tell him they want him to withdraw. Takasato agrees. They then wish to talk to Hirose privately but Takasato fears the teacher is in trouble for helping him and asks to stay, when they try and force him out he threatens to go to the media and tell them that the school forced him to withdraw whilst he had no legal guardian.

Takasato had worked out that though all the deaths and injuries had something to do with his curse, they never happened when he was there. So the safest place for Hirose, literally the only person to treat him with kindness in about five years, was right at his side. However it is not enough and Hirose is attacked in a classroom by a shadow whilst Takasato is trapped outside. Takasato fights his way in and yells that Hirose is not his enemy. The shadow shrinks and tells him that they are his protectors, before it crumbles.

The media has at this point decided that Takasato is an enemy and a monster. He and Hirose avoid the news and sit in the flat, despite the threatening notes from the neighbours. Hirose asks Takasato what he thinks of if he says king. Takasato says Taiou and they play a word association game to try and recover some memories. Kirin, twelve kings, covenant, King Tai, demons, siren, Haku Sanshi.

Hirose comes to the conclusion that Takasato is King Tai, Sanshi is the woman who spoke to him and the kirin is the monster who tried to kill him. He doesn't share this with Takasato though, worried in case he is wrong.

More reporters are killed. People throw rocks at Hirose's flat and threaten to storm in and attack Takasato. Takasato and Hirose are taken away by the police to a friend of Hirose. It is near the sea. They see strange creatures who call out for a Ren Taiho.

The building that Hirose's flat was in explodes. Youths set Takasato's old house on fire. Then they get the news that part of the school has collapsed. Hirose sets off to investigate and help but then has a terrible feeling, remembering Takasato saying something strange at the window and returns to the flat to find Takasato about to jump. After he fails at talking Takasato down he grabs him and threatens to jump if Takasato does. That is enough to make him pause.

Then a strange woman appears and tells Takasato that he must not die because 'if you die, he dies'. Takasato asks who she is and begs to know what is happening, who he is, why these things kept happening around him. She tells him that if he does not remember it is best he doesn't know. She opens the emergency door and Hirose takes Takasato back inside.

The woman and Hirose speak for a moment away from Takasato, she says she is Renrin, gives the names of the creatures as Gouran and Sanshi, explains that they know only justice and tells Hirose to leave Taiki and run, that the king of En is coming and a greater calamity will occur. Hirose refuses to leave.

He and Takasato talk, Takasato is completely despondent. So many deaths have been caused by him. Hirose relays Renrin's words and tries to get him to think about what Gouran, King En and Taiki means. Takasato doesn't care anymore, so caught up in the fact that so many people have died because of him.

Hirose tells him that he thinks he is King Tai. Takasato instinctively says no. He is not King Tai. He doesn't know who he is but he knows that is not true. He is not the king.

And then he remembers. King Tai. His master. He had sworn never to leave his side or disobey his command. That's all he remembered. But it was enough. He had to go back. To wherever 'there' was. He says he would have never ran away or left willingly. He has to return. He moves to the window but tells Hirose that he will not die. He cannot because he has to return to his king.

Hirose figures out that it is all a misunderstanding. That this Gouran and Sanshi have assumed anyone who harms Takasato is an enemy of the king.

It turned out thirty students had been killed, ninety were still missing and many more were injured, some severely.

Takasato hears voices on the breeze and wants to follow them. Hirose tells him to stay but Takasato runs out of the flat and towards the shore. Hirose follows him. They see Renrin again who tells Hirose to run, to get high up, that the King of En is coming and there will be a flood.

Then she changes into kirin form and Takasato, Taiki, remembers. Everything comes flooding back. He's not a person. He's a kirin. He has a king. He has a duty. He lost his horn. He lost his king. He needs to return now.

Hirose, confused and angry at everything doesn't understand or believe him, he tells him to transform and Taiki explains that he cannot. Hirose tries to stop him, refuses to leave him. Gouran and Sanshi begin to attack and Taiki begs them to stop. Asking if they have forgotten bad and good. They stop. Sanshi bows to Hirose and Taiki hugs her and Gouran.

Hirose wants to go with Taiki but Taiki says he can't drag him into this any more. He has to go back. He can't stay on earth. He begs Hirose to run and his final words to him are to go to the mountains, like they had talked about.

Shouryuu arrives. Enki has already done a bunch of paperwork accepting Taiki as a refugee from Tai and making him a citizen of En. They have given one of their counts a sabatical and therefore Shouryuu makes Taiki a sage and count of his court before dragging Taiki and his shirei through a shoku, flooding the area and causing two hundred deaths. A terrible price.

They fly back to Kei, where Risai had arrived some months before, begging for help. Though Taiki had walked around on earth and been alright passing through the storm the moment he arrived in the Twelve Kingdoms his taika shell was stripped away, leaving behind a broken, corrupted kirin.

He fell unconscious, near deaths door. His essence was in tatters, the other kirin could barely sense it and they could not go near him. The stench of death and corruption is too great that they cannot even enter the room he is in.

Shouryuu (King En), Youko (Queen Kei) and Risai take him to Mount Hou where the head sage tells them it would be better to kill him, allow a new ranka to grow. They refuse and she says she can sever his shirei but the corruption is so great that only the gods could save him.

So they go to meet the gods that at least two of the party aren't even sure are real. The mother of the West and Tentai. They also say that it would be best that Taiki die and a new ranka grow. He is more than just poisoned and sick. He is despised and loathed, practically cursed with the weight of the corruption and hatred upon him.

Risai tells them that it is unfair, that Taiki and Gyousou never disobeyed the mandate of heaven and yet the gods would punish them.

The gods point out that Taiki is useless, a hornless kirin with no shirei. Risai argues that you do not have a kirin lead armies or put one on a barricade. They are the hope of the people. Taiki will bring the people of Tai hope. The people of Tai do not have time to wait for another ranka to be born.

So the gods remove the corruption, healing him and his shirei are severed from his shadow. He is taken back to Kei where he sleeps for a long time.

He eventually awakes, apologising profusely for all the bother he has caused. Everyone is pretty upset by the fact that the cute, cheerful tiny kirin they knew is now grown up and very broken.

The situation is explained to him, he has a terrible awkward conversation with Keiki but it concludes with Keiki telling him that he was not too late. That he had been saved because they all believed he could save Tai.

He speaks to Youko, about them both being taika. He thanks her for her help and tells her she is an impressive queen. Whilst they are speaking armed guards rush in and try to assassinate Youko, a rebellion. It is swiftly stopped.

Once he is recovered enough to move he tells Risai that they should return to Tai. Her plan had been to put him somewhere safe and return to Tai to spread the word and she feels strongly that with one arm and he with no shirei they are more likely just to be ripped apart by Youma the moment they enter Tai. She tries to convince him to be safe. He tells her that it is the same as when he was a child, she is trying to shield him. But he is no longer a child though in many ways he is weaker than before.

He says that they cannot bring great calamities to Kei and gives an impassioned speech about being subjects of Tai and if they as citizens of Tai cannot bring themselves to try and save Tai then Tai is as good as lost. A horn-less kirin and a one armed general may not be able to save Tai on their own but this is not something they were destined to do through the strength of their own wills alone. If they conclude they can do nothing and so do nothing then they lose the right to call themselves citizens of Tai. If they cast the citizens of Tai aside then it would be a great betrayal.

He and Risai sneak away from Kei, though Enki catches them and gives them passports and a Kijyuu. They travel to Tai meet some people loyal to the king. Taiki suggests that the easiest way to solve the whole mess is to kill him and have the heavens start over again. But no one will hear of it.

One morning not long into their journey Taiki leaves the group and heads to the capitol. He tells those that he is traveling with that heaven is telling him to go there but that is a lie. His plan is to go to the palace, tell Asen that he is the king and then try and work for the betterment of Tai's people from inside the wolfs den. Whilst also taking attention away from Risai and the search for Gyousou and search in case Gyousou is a prisoner in the palace itself.

Taiki shows up, gets thrown in jail. Eventually he is taken before Asen who refuses to believe him. Rousan tells Asen that he should wound Taiki, because if he is not the true king then Taiki's shirei will attack but if he is then they will not harm him. Asen draws his sword and attacks Taiki. No demons retaliate.

Taiki takes up the mantel of Taiho once more and plans are made for a coronation. Gains some allies including Yari. He soon learns everything is way more complicated than he even thought.

He is in the palace for about half a year as his situation gets worse and worse. But he is slowly healing and soon he begins to look north. Trying to keep it secret. He can feel something terrible and awesome from the north. The ouki of the king.

He continues trying to persuade Asen and others to help Tai. It turns out Asen is using Youma that can steal peoples souls in order to create puppets. Taiki tries to balance everything, whilst not getting any of his allies hurt and trying to help Tai.

He sneaks down into the dungeons to rescue Seirai. He attacks a guard after contemplating that killing can't be that different than your shirei killing. But he can't actually go through with it and Yari kills the guard, telling Taiki off as Taiki freaks out. They get the information they need, whilst Taiki grieves for Seirai's tortured state. He sends Kouryou off to get the information out.

The next day some of the ministers come to ask Taiki about his missing guard. Asen turns up and after some conversation snaps and throws Taiki to the ground demanding that he swear to him then and there. Taiki's allies try to intervene but Taiki kneels and bows down, fighting through the pain, his will greater than the fact that this is meant to be impossible. Pain doesn't matter because he has caused so much death and suffering, he has no right to complain. He bows down and swears the oath, Asen leaves, there is blood in Taiki's eyes.

Things escalate. There is an attack on his life, he is still powerless to help the people. Taiki speaks to Asen again, another plea to get him to actually rule, to help the people and to stop Tai from being destroyed. Asen tells him that he knows he is not the true king. That without a horn Taiki cannot hear the divine will of heaven. He knows Taiki has lied but has gone along with it as it fits his plans. He has Taiki taken back to his quarters where Taiki becomes a prisoner in his own home.

Over the other side of Tai Gyousou is found, there is a massive fight Gyousou is finally captured by Asen's forces and brought back to the capital to abdicate. The gates of the palace are to be opened so the citizens can witness this and execute the 'false' king.

Taiki tells Yari that he has caused so many deaths and through all that could not do even one useful thing for Gyousou so when Gyousou is brought in to the palace to be abdicated he plans to at least show everyone who the real king as he may have been an utterly useless kirin but he never regretted choosing Gyousou.

So that is his plan, to get to his king, bow before him and show the kingdom who the true king is. He asks Yari for help but she is not sure it will have the impact he hopes for as he is a black kirin and therefore not instantly recognisable. Most people have never seen Taiki and those that have remember him as a tiny child. However she understands that he is asking as a final wish. He does not plan to survive this. He will die with his king and the next kirin and king of Tai will hopefully do a better job than he has managed.

The next day when Gyousou is brought to the platform Taiki, who is stood at Asen's side, grabs a sword off a guard, kills the guard and runs. Heading towards his king, Yari taking down all anyone in his path.

And that is his canon point.

World(s)

The universe of the 12 Kingdoms is actually two worlds. Our Earth and a second world formed of 12 Kingdoms. This world doesn't have a name, it is just here. These worlds are connected though they rarely touch except when Shoku (storms) bring them crashing together.

Earth

The Earth connected to the Twelve Kingdoms is identical to our own modern earth. At current canon point it is 1995 on Earth. The connection between Earth and the Twelve Kingdoms seems to be in Japan (named Hourai in the Twelve Kingdoms) though China (Kunlun) is also mentioned as a place Shoku connect with as well.

The 12 Kingdoms

As for the Twelve Kingdoms themselves, after a period where the rulers of the world ruled with injustice and showed no respect to their subjects Tentei made the world anew. Thirteen kingdoms were created, with the center one being Mt. Hou, a holy mountain surrounded by the yellow sea, which is not a sea at all but rather a landmass filled with demons. It is on Mt. Hou that Kirin are hatched.

Tentei is the creator god of the Twelve Kingdoms. There are other gods, but Tentei is the only one continuously referred to by name. He is also known as emperor of the heavens and it is him that couples prey to when they wish a child. The gods are the ones who chose the king and the kirin convey the will of the gods. There are many in the twelve kingdoms however who doubt the existence of the gods, despite the many ways the gods have a direct touch on the world.

The other Kingdoms are En, Han, Hou, Kei, Kou, Kyou, Ren, Ryuu, Sai, Shun, Sou and Tai. Each kingdom was given a King (or Queen) chosen by the gods and a Kirin who channelled the will of the gods in order to find the king for the kingdom.

There are eight inner kingdoms and four outer kingdoms. The status of each kingdom is reliant on how the King is in that kingdom, with some kingdoms being very prosperous for hundreds of years and others going through strings of kings that only last a few years each, and therefore are constantly in tumult. However this only affects the country in which the king is failing and does not extend over borders.

If however a king is a just and righteous one and does not disobey the will of the heavens then they can enjoy a long and prosperous reign. Kings are immortal and so their reign can last for hundreds of years.

At canon point En and Sou are the most prosperous kingdoms, enjoying a five hundred and six hundred year reign respectively. Han is at three hundred years. Kei is beginning to stabilise after a period of instability- the current queen is the protagonist of the series of a whole but the one before her reigned only for six years. Sai, Ren, Kyou and Shun are doing fine around the eighty to one hundred year mark. Kou and Hou are without king or kirin, though the Kouka is growing (rumours are the Houka got swept away in a shoku). Ryuu is beginning to destabilise. Tai is hell on earth.

There is no violence or war between kingdoms. To someone living in the Twelve Kingdoms such a concept is almost unthinkable. It is one of the main mandates of heaven. In fact a king leading their armies across the borders to another kingdom is one of the greatest sins. There is a story of a former king of Sai. The neighbouring country of Han had began to fall into despair as the king had lost the way. To help starving citizens the king of Sai sent in his army to help people evacuate. It was never an invasion force, no one believed the king of Sai to be working against the people of Han. However a few days later both he and his kirin were struck down by the heavens. Not in the usual way but instant, terrible death. The kanji of the kingdom even changed to reflect how terrible a sin had been committed.

The Way. Or the Divine Mandate is the rule that the rulers of the kingdoms must follow. There are laws and then there are loopholes and navigating it is a legal mine field. One that can result in them being struck down by the gods if they get it wrong. The mistress of the mountain (Genkun) is the bridge between the gods and the people and is able to give advice.

Each Kingdom produces and exports different things. For example Tai is famous for gem springs (literally natural seams of gems that come up from the ground) but the climate is not suitable for agriculture.

En is very agricultural, is famous for innovation and its liberal policies regarding refugees from turbulent kingdoms, Earth and also its policies towards Hanjyuu- allowing them to attend higher levels of education or obtain employment. Shun is known for precious stones and medicinal springs. There is trade between the stable prospering kingdoms and some kingdoms such as En try and help refugees of failing countries though they cannot interfere directly in other kingdoms affairs without the permission of the King of that kingdom.

The Kingdoms are not really allied together. They have vested interests and diplomatic relations but the idea of banding together to do something for the good of everybody is a strange a foreign concept.

People of the Twelve Kingdoms

The world of the Twelve Kingdoms is split into the world below and above the sea of clouds. The world below is the normal mortal world where people reside. It is formed of the twelve kingdoms, surrounded by the sea of nothingness. There are four inner seas, the yellow sea which is surrounded by the Adamantine mountains. In the centre of the yellow sea there are five mountains. The central one is Mount Hou which is where the kirin are born.

The sky is also a sea. Called the 'sea of clouds'. From the land below it looks just like the sky, sometimes clear, sometimes cloudy. But from above it looks like a literal sea, often filled with clouds. This sea only looks so deep as an adult is tall but if you were to dive into it you would find it's depths are unfathomable. There are mountains that stretch high above the clouds. Imperial and provincial palaces in all nations are in these mountains above the sea of clouds. From above they look like a series of islands floating on the sea.

The only way to reach these palaces you enter through the gates and step onto the staircase that allow you to move further than you think. The staircases and pathways are long but for each pace you take you move feet up the mountain side. It is possible to fly above the sea of clouds on Shirei or Kijyuu or Kirin and flying from one palace to another is how most ministers and those who serve the king travel. Flying of Kijyuu cuts a journey of a couple of months down to weeks or even days.

Still getting anywhere in the Twelve Kingdoms is a lengthy process. Nobility use phoenixes to communicate. These are curious birds that can recite a message perfect in a persons voice. To record a message you place the bird on your head and speak. They will then fly to the recipient and recite it in your voice. They eat silver and need to be fed before they will fly.

One of the most notable differences between Earth and the Twelve Kingdoms is that the people of the Twelve Kingdoms are born in Ranka (egg fruits). When a couple want a child they tie a piece of ribbon to a sacred tree (called a Riboku tree) and pray to Tentei, a child then grows on the tree in a Ranka and hatches from it. You pray for animals and such on different days of the month. Human children can be prayed for on the seventh day and then any day after the ninth.

The Riboku tree is holy and sanctified. Youma and other predatory animals will not enter the shadow of a Riboku tree and so it is the last safe place in any village or town. There is an imperial riboku in each kingdom and branches from that are planted to create the riboku in each town and village. The king can also ask the gods for new plants or even animals for their kingdoms and the first of such species will grow on the imperial riboku.

Sometimes the child grown on a Riboku is not human. Hanjyuu are half beasts that have both a human and animal form, they have human parents. They are just as intelligent as humans but are in many kingdoms considered less than human, in many kingdoms they are not entered on the census and therefore do not have the rights of a citizen.

In order to pray to a Riboka you must be married formally on the kingdoms census. People who do not wish to have children often enter into looser common marriages that don't require all the paper work of formal marriage. Divorcing is easy and people will merge families and look after each others children.

Family is a little different. Though the bonds between people are no different than on earth the raising of a child is seen more as a holy duty and not about continuing your own line. Children do not look like their parents. Passing down inheritance is outlawed in every kingdom.

Instead every citizen registered on the census receive a partition of land and a house when they turn twenty (on New Year, their age calculated traditionally as being one at birth and gaining a year on each New year. This seems to be the only time the traditional way of counting age is used, people otherwise use their birthdays and count as zero at birth.)

These partitions of land are in hamlets, eight plots of land with a ninth plot for eight houses and small gardens. What people grow is their own, except what they pay in tax. They can sell this in villages, towns and cities. It is possible to sell your land and many of those who grow up in towns and cities do so, selling their land to people who hire tenant farmers and using the money to buy a house and start a business.

A village is a central point to a group of hamlets and it holds the riboku. People farm in the summer and move to the villages in winter. Many people will own a house in a village as well, or rent one for the winter. Each village has a rike, which is an orphanage, old peoples home and central gathering place in the winter for people to work, weave etc. To have use of a rike you must have been born in the village or be registered on the census there.

There are of course towns and cities, merchants, inn keepers and shop keepers. When a person dies their wealth and land goes back to the kingdom. Therefore each person only accumulates what they themselves create and earn. This system of giving land to each citizen and inheritance being forbidden is one of the mandates of heaven.

This is not to say that every person in a kingdom is equal in wealth. There are loopholes and people use them. People take advantage of others. Life as a peasant can be hard in less wealthy kingdoms. Unjust and corrupt officials can make life hell. People are not generally allowed to travel freely between provinces or kingdoms. It requires a passport (often a wooden token). It is possible to gain such things for those who need them, again it is a lot easier in a wealthy enlightened kingdom than one ruled by a tyrant.

When a kingdom falls hardship and ruin comes to it. Perhaps not straight away, depending on the circumstances of the end of the king's reign, but eventually it will become a place where youma attack and harvests fail, where natural disasters plague the land. As kingdoms rise and fall there are inevitably refugees from one land to another.

Prosperous good kingdoms will try and help such refugees as much as they can but they remain citizens of the land of their birth unless they willingly give up such citizenship. A refugee in another land has no land, nor can they pray to a riboku. or retire to a rike when they are old. Many will seek work with the wealthy of a kingdom, giving up their citizenship in exchange for a roof over their head, food and a job. Such indentured servitude is frowned upon in the more stable, benevolent kingdoms but is widespread elsewhere.

Those living in the kingdoms have very little knowledge of the courts, of lords and kings. They know that the king is chosen by the kirin. They are aware that a kingdom with a king is better than one without. But in general their knowledge of politics is low. Every citizen has the right to go to primary school. Often those who are bright can be recommended to a further academy and there are even universities. How much education is accessible to the average person depends highly on what kingdom they are from.

People are aware another world exists because people sometimes wash up on the shores of the kingdom. They call it Hourai. It is known to be a mystical land where the streets are paved with gold, there are no wars and nobody goes hungry.

Even though the Twelve Kingdoms is a world where the gods have a direct hand the people are not very religious. People who wish children pray to Tentei but apart from that there are no shrines. People do not pray for good harvest or to be safe from youma. They are a very practical people. They trust firstly in their own hard work, they trust in their king and if they are without a king then there is nothing the gods can do for them.

Taika and shoku

As previously mentioned the worlds are connected but for an ordinary person these two worlds will never meet..

There are those that can pass from one to another. Kirin, emperors and those on the immortal register of sages who possess a high enough rank can. It requires the use of the 'Gogou gate'. By accessing the supernatural powers of the Moon a gate can be opened in the moons shadow. Therefore crossing can only happen at night and can only happen below the sea of clouds and not in the yellow sea.

Crossing from one world to another causes shoku. A shoku is often called a storm but can indeed be any calamity. An earthquake, a lake drying up overnight, a landslide. So it should not be done unless there is good reason. Kirin cause the least harm in crossing.

The king of Ren has a magical item called the Gogukanda. It allows wormholes to open without the restrictions of the moon and can be used above the sea of clouds. Only magical creatures such as kirin and shirei can pass through it but it does not cause shoku.

Kirin are also capable of creating meishoku, a storm contained in the scream of a kirin. This does not rely on the power of the moon but instead the kirins own abilities create a wrinkle in time and space and causes a great deal of damage.

Those from the twelve kingdoms find it difficult to survive on earth and keep their forms, they slip in and out of the ley lines and can lose themselves. They often end up being perceived more like ghosts.

Shoku are not always caused by a crossing, sometimes they occur naturally and the crossing is accidental. There are those of course who blow over unwillingly in shoku.

Those that are blown from Earth to the Twelve Kingdoms are refugees there. They do not have the same problems of those that try and journey the other way. They can exist and live in the Twelve Kingdoms as people however they can't speak the language. Those from Japan are called Kaikyaku and they wash up on the shores from the endless sea. Those from China tend to be found in the mountains surrounding the inner seas. They are rarer.

People are not blown the other way but ranka (egg fruits) can be blown over to earth. The still forming child inside is born to a human family. To those in the Twelve Kingdoms they are called Taika. Whilst they live on earth they are inside a 'taika shell'- meaning they look like ordinary humans from Japan. Most will never return to the 12 Kingdoms. Living their days on Earth, perhaps feeling a little strange or that they do not fit in but never knowing that they are not from this world.

If a taika does return to the Twelve Kingdoms their taika shell breaks off and their true self as a person of the Twelve Kingdoms is revealed. If they go back to earth at all then they resume their taika shell and do not have the same problems that other Twelve Kingdom citizens have. Therefore if travel to earth is necessary it is always best to send Taika.

The Yellow Sea

In the centre of the world there lies the yellow sea. A land of youma and youjyuu. It is surrounded by mountains that protect the kingdoms from the youma. There are four gates that open only for four days of the year on each of the solstices. This is when people wishing to become king enter the yellow sea to take the shouzan.

Youma are monsters. No one knows where they come from (no tree that hatches them has ever been found) nor is it known how long their natural lives are. They mostly roam the Yellow sea, though when a kingdom is without a king they descend on it, ravaging the land. No one knows how they get there, they do not cross other kingdoms to do so. They just appear.

Youma are always male and generally evil unless serving a Kirin. Kirin are the only creatures that can subdue them, they make a pact with them. The Youma serves the Kirin (as a Shirei) and in return on the Kirin's death is allowed to consume the body and therefore the magical energy of the Kirin. The intelligence levels of Youma differs, with some being capable of human speech. A Shirei therefore is simply a Youma that has made a pact with a Kirin. There is no difference in abilities between a wild Youma and a Shirei. Shirei however are good, as they serve the will of the Kirin and revert to being wild Youma after a Kirin's death.

Youjyuu are another kind of monster, one that can be tamed by humans. They make great and powerful flying mounts. They also do not seem to be have trees (there is no thing as a baby Youjyuu...) and are found in the Yellow sea, they feed off Youma. Youjyuu that have been caught and tamed as mounts are called Kijyuu.

Both Youma and Youjyuu have a great fondness for shiny things. Gemstones and treasures to them are like catnip. A good trap is to lay out a Youjyuus favourite gemstone as a lure.

Nyokai are nursemaid demons. They are female Youma that hatch on Mt. Hou just before a Kirin and are destined to protect the Kirin's ranka and the Kirin themselves when they are young. They are a mixture of creatures, and the more creatures in the mix the greater they are said to be. Their egg fruits hatch from the roots of the tree that the Kirin are born from. They die when the Kirin die.

Though the yellow sea is a harsh land full of monsters there are those that make a living there. They are called the koushu no tami. They are people of no kingdom at all. They hold red passports which allow them travel but grant them no king's protection. Most of the koushu are brought in as children of refugees whose parents sell them into apprentices. There are koushu villages (with riboku) but they are a secret that barely anyone knows about.

Among the koushu there are goushi and shushi. Shushi are kijyuu hunters, they capture kijyuu to sell or guide others into the Yellow sea to capture kijyuu. Goushi are guides that accompany people on the shouzan. Koushu life is hard and mercenary.

The shouzan is a dangerous month and a half trek from one of the four gates to Mount Hou. Many of those who start the journey do not finish, with youma attacks being only one of the many dangers on the way.

It is said by the goushi that if it seems extraordinary luck is on the side of a group making the shouzan it means that the future king is among them. This is known as 'riding the wings of the phoenix' among the Koushu.

Incidentally there is a back door to Mount Hou that can be reach by flying over the sea of clouds, but it is only accessible to kings, kirin and any they take with them.

Kirin, Kings and Kingdoms

Kirin are holy creatures created by the gods for the sole purpose of channelling the divine will, selecting a king and then serving that king and keeping them on the right path.

Kirin grow on a special tree called the Shashinboku in the centre of the world. They are born in beast form and spend their first few years knowing themselves only as a beast. They are unable to speak or really understand the Nyosen (the sages who live on the mountain). In these first few years they tread the shores of the yellow sea, catching and taming Youma into Shirei. Their nyokai are their foster-parent and their milk builds up a kirins resistance to injury and blood. Eventually as their horn grows they are able to take on human form more and speak.

They live on Mount Hou until they chose their king. They are the masters of Mount Hou and treated with great reverence by the Nyosen, who school them in the way of the world, the intricacies of court and etiquette. All the things they will need to serve their king in a formal sense. Though for their most important job, of keeping the king on the right path. That is instinctual and not something that can be taught.

Kirin are naturally peaceful creatures. They naturally shy from violence. They will not wield weapons or harm any living thing. The very idea is terrible and troubling to them. They become weakened at the sight and smell of blood, and if exposed to a lot of blood develop blood sickness. They do not eat meat or other products from animals. Meat is like poison to them. Their horns are only seen in beast form, in human form it is invisible but centred on their forehead but Kirin dislike it being touched, it makes them feel nauseous. Kirin can sense other kirin, they see their aura as a golden glow around them.

Usually once a kirin reaches an age where they can maintain a human form (usually around the age of five) the gates to Mt. Hou are opened and all those from the kingdom who wish to make pilgrimage (shouzan) do so. The Kirin meets with these people and searches for the king. The king has an Ouki (an aura) around them. This aura is the sign from the gods that they are the one chosen to be the king. This Ouki is often more of a feeling, am instinctive knowledge that this is the ruler of their kingdom. This ouki can be felt all the time, therefore a kirin will be able to find their king if they are in range, and have a vague sense of direction of where they are if they are far away. They instinctively know the moment their master dies.

To chose the king the Kirin bows before them and swears an oath, to serve and obey them therefore bestowing the kingdom on them. The King and Kirin then ascend and go to their kingdom. There is a bird in each kingdom that calls out in a human voice twice in it's life. Once to call the coronation of a king when the ascend and once to declare the death of a king- whereby the bird falls off it's perch dead. The foot of the bird is sometimes used as the imperial seal during an interim government before a new king is crowned.

The king and kirin are linked to the land, if the king fails the kingdom and it's people or defies the will of heaven the Kirin is struck with a wasting disease called shitsedou. If the king refuses to change their ways the Kirin dies and a king without a kirin won't live out the year. Without a king the kingdom is thrown into chaos, demons attack and it cannot prosper until the new Kirin finds the next king.

And so the kirin's job is to keep the king on the right path. The kirin serves as a minister, usually of the province that houses the capital city. Their formal title is Taiho. The provincial guard cannot be mobilised without the kirin's consent. But mostly they are there to be the 'embodiment of the will of the people'. Kirin naturally will shy away from bloodshed, have great empathy for the people of their land and want to act only in their best interests even if such decisions are not politically sound. In the strongest kingdoms a king and their kirin balance each other perfectly. A king has to make hard decisions and the kirin is there to remind them of the consequences for the people.

Kirin don't have name. Instead their title is formed from their kingdom name and then the suffix 'ki' for a male kirin and 'rin' for a female. Whilst in their ranka they are called by their kingdom name and 'ka'. Some Kirin are given familiar names by their Kings or if they were taika they keep part of their earth name.

Kirin cannot full-bow to anyone who is not their king. They cannot swear a false oath. They are creatures that are known for their honesty. They do not have to obey anyone who is not their king though they will obey the ministers and others that the king has put in positions of power. They will always obey their king, even if they are ordered to do things that they disagree with, will hurt their kingdom or cause the king to fall. Kirin are always happy to be around their king, even if their king is not a worthy one and always sad to be parted from them.

Kirin are immortal, except when they die of shitsudou are beheaded, or otherwise murdered in way that destroys them or if they fail to find the king, in which case they will not live past thirty years. Once they take the throne kings and queens are also immortal. There is also a registry of sages where those that serve in armies or as ministers become immortal whilst in service. The sages on mount Hou are also immortal through the same means.

The king is always a citizen of the kingdom but they could be anyone from a government minister to a peasant in the field. Often those chosen do not immediately have what it takes to become a great king and so the prosperity of kingdoms differs vastly. However the idea is that if a king obeys the mandate of heaven their kingdom shall prosper.

Because kings are immortal the world above the clouds often seems very different than the one below. A kingdom can take years to stabilise. A country as great as En has taken five hundred years to form. Many many generations of En struggled before this time of prosperity.

Each court is different though they share a common culture and etiquette. The differences come from the king. The king of En has little to do with the day to day running with things- he has cultivated his ministers over five hundred years. Yet there is no doubt he is the final power. In the court of Kei know-towing is forbidden outside of set ceremony and ritual. The king of Ren is a farmer and tends his kingdom like a farmer would tend his crops. The queen of Kyou has a strong sense of responsibility and everyone knows their place and worth, therefore her court is very traditional. Though Tai's court only lasted six months it was militaristic and precise.

Tai

Tai is located in the North East of the Twelve Kingdoms, it has an extremely cold climate and long harsh winters. Even when it is warmer it has a constant cold breeze. In the Winter it is so cold that people cannot survive without fuel. The people are known to be hot headed with quick tempers, perhaps to counter balance their cold, barren land. They are stubborn and strong willed.

It's main resource is it's jewel springs, which after the rule of the last king are mostly depleted. The land is mostly unsuitable for farming and so food is scarce. The capitol city is called Kouki and this is where the king resides.

Not long after taking the throne- indeed before he had even made his inaugural speech King Gyousou made a plea to the heavens for a plant called Kaihaku. This plant originally grew only in the yellow sea but he asked the heavens to allow him to grow it in Tai. It is a stubborn plant that can be grown anywhere, corners of fields or scrub land. It produces white flowers and fruit that once dried burn as good as charcoal. This is known by the people of Tai as the kouji- the gift of the king who lives in Kouki and is the miracle that means Tai still has a people, despite everything.

The previous king of Tai- Kyou ruled for 124 years before losing the way. Towards the end of his reign he became arrogant, indulging in pleasure and ignoring his kingdom. Hoarding the gems and buying luxuries whilst letting his people starve.

There was a lot of corruption but there were ministers and generals in the army who cared enough about the kingdom to try and keep it afloat. Two of these were Gyousou and Asen, named the two jewels in the crown. Generals who helped keep the kingdom of Tai afloat through the last days of their uncaring king, the subsequent fall of the kingdom and the youma attacks.

It was necessary because on Mount Hou a shoku blew the taika (egg fruit of the new kirin of Tai) away and to Hourai. It would be ten years before he was found.

For those ten year Tai suffered calamities, youma attacks, bitter winters and starvation. Eventually it was announced that the kirin was ready to chose a king as there was a pilgrimage. Gyousou was chosen king by Taiki and he ascended the throne.

Six months later there was a coup. Gyousou was lured away to put down a rebellion and was turned on by part of his army and disappeared. Back in the palace there was a meishoku that destroyed chunks of the palace, killed many of the servants and those not on the immortal register. When the dust cleared it was discovered that Taiki had vanished.

Asen took the throne. He seemed to have no actual wish to rule properly but oppressed the people, wiping out whole towns that dared to question his rule. Destroyed villages, salted the earth. Youma attacks were frequent. People fled but eventually there were so many Youma surrounding Tai and with it being an island people could no longer flee. The people of Tai were dying. It is noted at one point that the situation in which you have a king who is missing and not on the throne is the worst of worst case scenarios. Tai has been like this for seven years.
