[ The interior of the spaceship is spartan, the lights running along the walls and ceiling shifting warmly through spring colours. Gyousou finds himself staring down at a glowing screen, and, really, the words aren't growing any less nonsensical the longer he looks. DIAGNOSTIC REPORT: The temporal hyperspace module has overloaded, resulting in an implosion in the starboard warp field array.
Hm. ]
I suppose the first step is to find out the location of the starboard warp field array.
[ It's far preferable to be faced with this unpleasant blaring display here, where there are no stakes, than on a mission with real people and real danger, but it still has him squinting as he joins Taiki at the map. ]
It is. Let's see, the third panel-- ah, here.
[ He taps the indicated section, and a line of soft orange flickers from it to another panel on the wall to their left. ]
[He moves over to Lord Gyousou's side and nods, watching as the light flickers to the other panel. He glanced back at the consol to see the warning light go out.]
That's one taken care of. [And many more to go.] We need to direct power from the emergency power store to the engine but... [He reads the screen.] That needs repaired first.
Imagine if Tai had such a screen. [He's musing as he crosses to another terminal, hunting for the words Taiki mentioned amongst the labels and levers.]
To see dangers laid out... Well, I suppose we have reports that serve the same purpose, but these visuals are striking.
Perhaps a map of Tai, marked with areas of concern. [His tone doesn't quite manage to stay casual, he doesn't want to think of how such a map would appear now, and regrets the suggestion once spoken.
No helping it.
Midway through his own sequence of lights and colours, and unsure if he can look away without sending the entire thing back to the start once again, Gyousou chances a glance back at the shrilling timer.]
Next time we should invite the others, more hands would make short work.
[That map indeed would be a terrifying sight to behold. He bowed his head but only for a moment, there was plenty happening to distract from the thought.
They would save no one by completing this simulation, but in training with it they might save people in the future.]
Yes, the more people the better I think. It is designed for a team. [Not surprising, considering the team structure on the train.]
Just so. [He's getting faster at recognising the sequences, at least, and starts to work his way back towards Taiki's side.]
Is the emergency power store fixed? [It's more a check before he starts to redirect the power, his glance over is more to smile warmly, understanding of the conflict he just caused in the both of them, than to monitor him]
No more void storms? No more void storms, and that means no more rooming with Jingyi and pals, too. Tidus doesn't really mind; the bed is nice, but so's the room he and Inigo have put together, and the two spaces are just as cramped as one another (which, they're not bad, but it isn't like the hire rooms have anything to make Tidus miss them).
But this means no more rooming with Taiki, specifically; no more Taiki spending times with pals. And sure, they got together because of Jingyi, but there's a difference between the pair. Taiki has less people in his life, Jingyi without anyone from home technically, but still with familiar faces. Taiki's just like Inigo, sleeping with friends, even sleeping with him and Inigo sometimes.
Jingyi's call for sleeping pals isn't what makes this relevant, but it helps to make Tidus pay attention to the extra double sleepers. The idea popping in mind, an idea that should have come way earlier.
So, the next time that Tidus sees Taiki (likely during breakfast), he's as keen as ever to be the one to start talking. And about a subject relevant to Taiki:
"Hey, Taiki, what would you think about sharing a double room with someone?"
Taiki was quietly eating his breakfast when Tidus approached. Launching into conversations before pleasantries were even finished which is something Taiki is used to from Tidus.
Even if the question is a little surprising. "Oh. Um... I guess it would be nice. But I wouldn't want to inconvenience anyone..."
He can't think that anyone would want to share a room, and certainly not a bed with him. Outside his close friends and even then...
"No way! You couldn't inconvenience anyone!" Tidus instantly protests, dismisses the thought. Sat down with his own food, scooping up some with a fork.
"What about Jingyi? He was complaining about his bed being too small, and he likes company. Or you can ask Roland - he probably wouldn't mind. ...Well," he considers after a beat. "Maybe. I don't know what he'd think about that."
A forty-year-old guy sharing a room with someone half his age, and all. Anyway.
"But it'd be nice, right? You deserve some more room!"
What about his roommates? Eh, who's thinking about that right now.
He doesn't know what Roland would think about that either. It would be strange. He's not sure the other man would be comfortable at all with it. But Jingyi?
"I'm not sure... I'd have to ask him... Jingyi I mean. I don't know what he would feel about that."
He has strong ideas on so many things.
It would be nice though. He likes Mordin and Noctis but he still feels very nervous around them.
"Well he didn't mind that time he invited us over." Or Inigo and Taiki invited themselves + Tidus over. "And he knows you wouldn't be asking him romantically."
...
...
"... unless you like the sound of that?"
He asks, just to make sure, gaze on Taiki innocent, unassuming. Do you want to blush and hold hands with Jingyi or anyone else, Taiki??
Taiki just blinked at him over his fruit. "No." He shook his head. "Lan Jingyi is a good friend. But I have never felt like that."
Not with anyone. He's not sure kirin ever did. He's never heard of them falling in love or getting married. He couldn't imagine it. For a kirin their greatest love was their kingdom and no person could stand greater than their king in their heart.
"There's a difference between a short term visit and sharing permanently."
There's a small "oh- mm", accepting, quiet, and that's that, really. There was a little more to the question, but the answer itself is very Taiki, and if there would ever be someone like that in the future - well, that was then.
But it's not like the question of relationships is totally random and out of place, when it comes to Jingyi.
"Mmm. But I think Jingyi does like sleeping with people - but yeah, sure, talk about it! Only problem I see is if it looks too couple-y to him. But friends share the double rooms too." A smile spreads wide. "I like it a lot! No feeling like you're gonna roll off the bed all the time, being able to move... Inigo gets more spots for growing, too."
There's a small 'heh' at that addition. Nothing to do with him, but at least Inigo's happy.
"Yes that's true. There have been friends who share those rooms. Rich and Alice... I do not believe the two are romantic with each other."
Tidus and Inigo only half count. Taiki knows. But also is not going to pressure Tidus about it, they will figure themselves out in time he is sure. He's not exactly an expert in such matters.
"I think... Losing Wen Sizhui has meant Lan Jingyi needs all the friends he can gather."
And he does often complain about the size of the beds.
And one of the few positives to look forward to, in a harmless, 'nothing can go wrong here' kind of way. Tidus doesn't hover or bug about it, knowing there's scant few items either of the guys have on them to need switching around. Plus, didn't the train do that last time?
It's no 'helping your pal move apartments' situation, regardless.
What it is, is Tidus finding time when he can come knock-knock-knocking on Jingyi and Taiki's new room, already grinning, some excitement to see the inside. Joined with a, "Hey, Taiki, you in? It's Tidus!", just so Taiki knows who the mysterious visitor is.
(But he could've easily guessed, let's be honest.)
Taiki has been quite nervous about today. Not that he is particularly nervous about Lan Jingyi, but he worries, worries he will be an annoyance to his friend. That he will come to regret agreeing to Taiki rooming with him.
But so far so good. Not that much could go wrong, in the first hour or so.
He maybe should have been expecting the knock, and once it came there were only a handful of people it could be.
Tidus was top of that list. He moved to the door to open it with a nervous smile. "Hello. Um... Come in."
"Hiii. Thanks!" There may be flutters in Taiki's belly, but Tidus is giddy, walking on in with the invitation to see - well, a sight he already knows he will. The room is the spitting image of his own, if less to it.
He sits himself straight onto the bed, eyes searching around for Taiki's jerboa. "Wow, I forgot how plain these rooms were." --ah, there's the little guy! "You should hang up some pictures. Some of your own drawings! Or what about painting on the walls?"
Taiki is totally the artsy guy who would just paint on the walls!
"Sure!" Free Taiki pictures? Why not! But his cheer does soften, when he admits: "I still have the picture you made for me. Of Yuna. I keep it in my arms band."
Close by. He pulls at his smile, a warm gesture, before he laughs lightly to brush away what might turn (or stay) too serious.
"--You don't want me making you any though. I've got a while 'til I can paint a half-decent blitzball worth showing off."
The attempt was fun, and his wasn't half bad -- but not wall worthy.
"You do?" He smiled sadly at that. He's glad. He made it for Tidus to keep after all, to remember Yuna. Still it is strange to think of someone keeping his art work.
He smiled though and shook his head. "Everyone starts somewhere. We could make a display, 'The evolution of the Blitzball by Tidus'.
Jingyi might have something to say if he turned the room into an art museum.
